"I am glad that after 66 years I am the first citizen of the Republic of Moldova to cross the Radauti-Lipcani bridge," Prime Minister Vlad Filat has said during the opening of the bridge which links Romania to Moldova. The inauguration ribbon was cut by Prime Minister Vlad Filat, Romanian Administration and Interior Minister Vasile Blaga and the head of the EU Delegation in Chisinau, Dirk Schuebel.<\/p>\n

Over 1,000 people from both banks of the Prut River attended the opening ceremony today. The Moldovan officials were received with bread and salt and military honours. Filat crossed the border, with customs officers putting stamps into his passport. "I am the first to enter Romania through this crossing point but also the first to return through it," Filat said.<\/p>\n

Addressing the audience, Filat said that this is the first bridge across Prut and that another 15 will be restored. "We will work so that the rights of our citizens be restored. We want to be free and we will live so. The Republic of Moldova is a European country with European citizens and our citizens should live like Europeans," Filat said.<\/p>\n

For his part, Vasile Blaga said that starting from 31 March, Moldovan citizens will be able to cross the Radauti-Lipcani bridge without visas, on the basis of e-permits, in line with the small-distance cross-border movement treaty.<\/p>\n

Besides Prime Minister Vlad Filat, Moldova was represented at the event by Interior Minister Victor Catan, the head of the Customs Service Tudor Balitchi and the head of the Border Guard Service Alexei Roibu. Romania was represented by Vasile Blaga, the head of the Suceava county council, Gheorghe Flutur, the head of the Botosani county council, Mihai Tibuleac, and the prefect of Botosani County, Cristian Roman.<\/p>\n

The Radauti-Lipcani bridge was built up in 1937 and destroyed in 1944 during bombing in the World War II. In 2000, the European Commission earmarked 11 million euros to Moldova and Romania to reconstruct the bridge. The construction was completed in 2005.
