Yanukovych Leads Ukrainian Presidential Runoff, Exit Polls Say<\/strong><\/p>\n

Exit polls say Viktor Yanukovych slightly leads in Ukraine’s presidential election against Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.<\/p>\n

The National Exit Poll, a consortium partly funded by Western embassies, said Yanukovych, the opposition leader, had secured 48.7 percent of the vote against Tymoshenko’s 45.5 percent. Another exit poll, by ICTV, said he took 49.8 percent of the vote against her 45.2 percent.<\/p>\n

Voters in the former Soviet republic of 46 million people went to the polls today in a tight presidential election runoff between the two bitterly opposed rivals, and amid warnings of possible mass protests and complaints of vote tampering.<\/p>\n

The two candidates have fought a bitter campaign, accusing each other of seeking to rig the vote. Many believe the losing side will contest the results in court and prolong an ongoing political crisis.<\/p>\n

Tymoshenko’s campaign team has already complained of violations during voting. Tymoshenko campaign chief Oleksandr Turchynov told reporters that Yanukovych’s supporters actions include "blocking the work of our election observers in the Donetsk region to open banditry and terrorism in some western Ukrainian regions."<\/p>\n

"This criminal approach to organizing an election cannot help holding it in an honest and transparent way," Reuters quoted him as adding.<\/p>\n

But the head of public security in the Interior Ministry, Volodymyr Mayevsky, said voting had gone "smoothly, without blatant violations of public order."<\/p>\n

RFE\/RL correspondent Gregory Feifer, who’s in Kyiv, says the race is too close to call, but that most are predicting a victory for Yanukovych, the winner of the election’s first round on January 17.<\/p>\n

President Viktor Yushchenko was eliminated from the election after a dismal performance in the first round. After casting his ballot today in central Kyiv, he said Ukraine’s main task is to show it can conduct a peaceful transfer of power, but that Ukrainians would regret either candidate’s victory.<\/p>\n

"I think Ukrainians will be ashamed of their choice, but that’s also democracy," Yushchenko said.<\/p>\n

Tymoshenko has threatened to bring her supporters onto the streets if she deems the vote unfair, warning that the protests would be larger than the 2004 Orange Revolution that brought Yushchenko to power.<\/p>\n

Yanukovych supporters have already set up tents along with a stage outside Kyiv’s Central Election Commission in preparation for possible postelection protests.<\/p>\n

In Kyiv, Tatyana Pavlova said she cast her ballot for him. "First of all because he’ll be together with Russia," she said. "Our roots are Russian, and we need friendly relations. They also live much better there, they have much higher pensions."<\/p>\n

Iryna Moskalyuk said she voted for Tymoshenko only because she’s more competent than Yanukovych. "Neither of the current candidates can change anything in the country because they’ve been in power so many years in different posts and even as president wouldn’t be able to do anything differently," she noted.<\/p>\n
