The commission in charge of reforming the constitution today decided that Moldova needs a new version of the constitution.<\/p>\n

The commission, chaired by acting President Mihai Ghimpu, took the decision to amend 69 articles of the constitution. The amendments will have to be approved by parliament and then put on referendum.<\/p>\n

The proposal was supported by 27 members of the commission. Two other members abstained.<\/p>\n

Mihai Ghimpu said that the referendum should take place and the new constitution should be approved before the current parliament is disbanded, which means until 16 June 2010.<\/p>\n

Mihai Ghimpu, speaking to journalists: "Yes, the commission decided to pass a new version of the constitution. This means that a referendum will be called. I believe that we will have a new constitution approved at referendum by 16 June, when I will have to dissolve parliament. Every article of the constitution will be studied. We will also hold consultations with experts from Germany, Romania and other countries, so that we draft a good constitution which we should not be ashamed of."<\/p>\n

The parliaments elected on 5 April 2009 and 29 July 2009 have failed to elect the country’s new president as no party or alliance of parties held the necessary 61 out of 101 votes necessary to elect the chief of state.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
