The Government of Moldova has again extended the timing for acquiring Republic of Moldova documents by residents of the breakaway Transnistrian region.<\/p>\n

The governmental Resolution on documentation for Transnistrians appeared yet in 2005, and its validity used to be extended every 6 months. For the first time ever, the latest Resolution adopted on the New Year eve did not stipulate any deadline, so this should mean that Transnistria residents are invited to apply for Republic of Moldova passports and other essential documents at any time they decide so, according to a simplified procedure, and on preferential terms, for the documentation expenditures are covered from the Moldovan State Budget.<\/p>\n

According to the Moldovan Ministry of Informational Technologies and Telecommunications, nearly 115 thousand residents of the Transnistrian region have already availed themselves of the procedure, though the number of Transnistrians having the Moldovan citizenship is estimated at 262 thousand.<\/p>\n

The Republic of Moldova passports permit Transnistria residents to travel abroad and use the privileges provided to citizens of Moldova. As for Transnistrian passports and other documents, these have not been recognized even by a single country of the world, so these papers can be used only inside the self-proclaimed and internationally unrecognized Transnistrian Moldovan Republic.<\/p>\n

The Transnistrian authorities are saying the region’s population currently constitutes some 530 thousand people. The separatist republic permits dual citizenship, so practically every adult resident of the small region has, besides Transnistrian passport, also the passports of Moldova, Russia, Ukraine or other countries. According to unofficial estimates, approximately 110 thousand residents of Transnistria have the Russian citizenship and 70 thousand – the Ukrainian citizenship.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
