The parties of the ruling Alliance for European Integration (AIE) have called for unity and unanimously stated that the Party of Communists’ (PCRM) refusal to participate in the 7 December presidential election would lead to its dissolution. On the other hand, the Communists said that they displayed unity during the repeated presidential election and noted that the alliance would collapse.<\/p>\n

At the end of the 7 December parliament meeting, the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, Vlad Filat, sent a message to society and Communist MPs, saying that Communists’ actions would not thwart the fulfilment of the alliance’s action programme.<\/p>\n

He described the Communists’ arguments as sterile, stressing that they were disturbed by the coalition’s unity.<\/p>\n

Filat called for unity within the Alliance, emphasizing that the next period will be complicated. "But I am sure that we will succeed," he said.<\/p>\n

For his part, the leader of the Democratic Party, Marian Lupu, warned that Moldova would embark on a path of instability, and called on the AIE’s components to make efforts to work in the country’s interests.<\/p>\n

Lupu said that, during negotiations with the Communists, he was not disturbed by the idea to create a centre-left alliance or by the PCRM’s name, but by the ways of government of the former ruling party. He criticized the formation which he had been a member of, stressing that it had nice intentions, but the ways of implementing them were inadequate. We did not want to live in fear or face political lawsuits; we want freedom, Lupu underlined. He also criticized the trend of the former government to find enemies both in Moldova and abroad, so as to subsequently start struggling against them.<\/p>\n

Lupu promised that the Democratic Party’s (PDM) policy will be more dynamic, and thanked the AIE for the provided support. He also called for unity and consolidation of the partnership within the AIE.<\/p>\n

A representative of the Our Moldova Alliance (AIE), Leonid Bujor, warned the former ruling PCRM that it would not be able to get a good electoral result at the next polls, as the AIE will undertake actions to secure a fair ballot. Bujor also said that the government would rule out the use of police as a political gun, and would open additional polling stations abroad. Also, the PCRM will not be able to use public money or money of economic agents on electoral purposes. He said that Communist leader Vladimir Voronin was the main person to be blamed for the political instability in Moldova, stressing that the PCRM’s decline begins starting from today.<\/p>\n

Bujor called for the AIE’s unity in order to achieve the European integration objective.<\/p>\n

PDM honorary chairman Dumitru Diacov said that he was outraged at the Communists’ attitude not to vote for Marian Lupu as president. He said that he had several meetings with PCRM representatives to persuade them to vote for the head of state. Diacov said that, during all the meetings, the PCRM tried to return to power with the PDM’s help, to destroy the AIE, dismiss the government and the parliament’s leadership. "It was a temptation for the PDM, and I am proud that Lupu resisted this temptation," Diacov said.<\/p>\n

Dumitru Diacov said that, during his discussions, he had the impression that the PCRM is led by Mark Tkaciuk and not by Vladimir Voronin, and the party is stirred by internal struggle for power. There was a group who wanted to elect Lupu, and others who categorically opposed. Namely they misinformed Voronin, Diacov stressed.<\/p>\n

He accused the Communists of being guided by group interests, thus triggering a snap election. Diacov made appeals to the AIE’s unity, and asked that all the animosities and internal competition be overcome.<\/p>\n

He promised that the PDM would do its utmost to preserve this Alliance.<\/p>\n
