The European Union will provide 30.1 million euros for Moldova to help this country to promote reforms and combat the economic crisis, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, European Union’s Commissioner for External Relations and the European Neighbourhood Policy, stated at the briefing in Chisinau on Friday.<\/p>\n

She said 4 million euros has already been allotted to Chisinau for democracy consolidation, which presupposes cooperation with European parliamentarians in the field of defining the reforms Moldova needs.<\/p>\n

Benita Ferrero-Waldner said the European Union realizes very well that Moldova is in a complicated economic situation, and that a capital investment is urgently necessary. So, the EU is providing a package of budget support, whose first tranche will be 26.2 million euros. The European Union is also preparing a macro-financial assistance, but its precise cost will be defined later on, and this assistance will be a supplement to the IMF loan.<\/p>\n

Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner said the European Union will delegate to Chisinau two high-ranked finance consultants, who will participate, jointly with the Moldovan Ministry of Finance, in negotiations with the International Monetary Fund, which are going to be quite hard. She assured that even if the Moldovan Parliament fails to elect president in December, the European Union shall not change its position with respect to Chisinau, and the monetary assistance shall come.<\/p>\n

"We do not interfere into the domestic policies of our partners. However, election of a president in Moldova is undoubtedly in the interests of Moldova citizens", she said.<\/p>\n

Benita Ferrero-Waldner arrived in Chisinau on Thursday afternoon for a two-day visit. She has already held meetings with Moldova’s Acting President, Parliament Chairman Mihai Ghimpu, Prime Minister Vlad Filat, some political leaders. This is her last official visit as the European Union’s Commissioner for External Relations and the European Neighbourhood Policy because this post will cease existing on December 1, when the Lisbon Treaty will come into effect.
