The former President of the Republic of Moldova [2001-2009], Chairman of the now opposition Moldovan Communist Party (MCP) Vladimir Voronin stated at a news conference today, "The opposition shall keep on boycotting the presidential election".<\/p>\n

"This is a boycott of the anti-social, anti-democratic and anti-European policy waged by the ruling Alliance for European Integration. There is nothing more in the boycott, nothing personal", Voronin stressed.<\/p>\n

He subjected the governing AEI to merciless criticism, claiming that "the Alliance has no strategy of country development", that "it is not clear whom they work on, or what for, or how", that "they have neither a team, nor specialists, nor competence enough to work out an anti-crisis program".<\/p>\n

Voronin went on explaining that the AEI "is but a patchwork alliance… The only force capable of protecting the interests of the grassroots is the Communist Party. And we shall be standing on this position in the future. We can’t vote for an AEI candidate. Nothing is able to influence this stance of ours!"<\/p>\n

Answering journalists’ questions about Russia’s position on the election question, Vladimir Voronin stated, "Moscow does not tell us whom we should vote for. Moscow says that we must handle our domestic problems ourselves".<\/p>\n

The MCP leader stated the election of a new president "is possible only in case some AEI members come to realize the entire complexity of the situation and revise their current position". He thus let understand he meant a left-centrist coalition of the Communist Party and the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n

"Now the Democratic Party must bear responsibility for all the doings of the new coalition [AEI]. The Democratic Party is guilty of betraying its electorate and of forming an alliance with Right parties. We the Communists have more in common with the DP than the Liberal Party has with the Liberal Democratic Party. After the [July 29 parliamentary] elections, the God itself arranged our having 48 mandates and the Democrats – 13 mandates, so together we would have 61 – precisely enough for electing president", said Voronin, adding that in such case the Communists could vote for Marian Lupu.<\/p>\n

"However, such a development of events is unlikely, After the elections, we had meetings with Democratic Party leaders – Dumitru Diacov [Honorable Chairman] and Marian Lupu [incumbent], and I saw that with these gentlemen you can’t make any business. They are not independent in their actions. You look at this two-meter-high guy [Lupu] and you can’t understand anything: you hear only mumbling coming out of him", Voronin said.<\/p>\n

He further held that Marian Lupu joined the Communist Party "unbeknownst to me… Look, Vasile Tarlev [Prime Minister in 2001-2008] had begged so long to be accepted to the MCP, but all in vain. But Lupu made it differently: he joined the party through the back door – when I was on a mission abroad. I was so angry upon learning that".<\/p>\n

Answering your Infotag correspondent’s question about differences in the MCP ranks, the party leader stated, "There are no discords whatever. Everything is all right in our party. Everyone has one’s own opinion, and there is no dictatorship of Voronin’s. But the party has a common position on principal matters".<\/p>\n

Vladimir Voronin absolutely ruled out a possibility that some MCP parliamentarians may vote for the AEI candidate for presidency. He said, "We are a serious party, and we are always ready for any political events, including for early elections".<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
