Prime Minister Vladimir Filat participated in a meeting of the Collegial Council of the Centre for Combating Economic Crimes and Corruption (CCCEC), the government’s press service has said on Friday.<\/p>\n

The event was focused on corruption risks at the Centre and the methodological support given by the central public authorities in the field, as well as the fulfilment of a plan of implementing the strategy of preventing and combating money laundering and terrorism financing.<\/p>\n

In his speech, Prime Minister Vladimir Filat said that five weeks have passed since the government was sworn in, and the activity of the government’s subdivisions was monitored on this period.<\/p>\n

"We ruled to preserve CCCEC as part of the government’s structure as we need an efficient mechanism of fighting against corruption and organised crime. It is no secret that the image of this institution is very negative in society, taking into account the role designated by the political actors that were in power. The goal of this Centre was to fight against corruption and organised crime, but it was distorted, and the Centre’s activity was aimed at settling narrow party interests and personal problems," the prime minister specified.<\/p>\n

Vladimir Filat said that he has more questions as regards some situations concerning the Centre’s activity.<\/p>\n

"The Centre’s employees know very well what this is about. I mean what is happening at the customs in terms of goods imports and illegal increases in tariffs or what happens in the sector of combating money laundering," Vladimir Filat said.<\/p>\n

The prime minister spoke about the work of phantom firms, which illegally embezzled huge sums of money from the state budget, as well as about the monopoly on the import of meat and fish.<\/p>\n

"I do not understand why the CCCEC has not undertaken anything so far to liquidate these illegal schemes," the prime minister said.<\/p>\n

Vladimir Filat voiced confidence that the Centre’s employees know the existing problems solutions to them. The prime minister asked them to prove maximal responsibility while exercising their duties.<\/p>\n

"Those who are not willing to comply with the law and really fight against the corruption will have to find another kind of activity," Vladimir Filat said.
