The leaderships of the Moldovan Communist Party (MCP) and the Democratic Party met today to discuss the DP’s appeal to the Communists concerning their participation in electing Marian Lupu as president of Moldova. The meeting was attended also by some other representatives of the governing Alliance for European Integration.<\/p>\n

The Democrats presented arguments in favor of their leader Lupu, and the Communists explained why they disagree to this candidature. Though the sides failed to achieve a consensus, they decided to proceed with such meetings on the president election issue.<\/p>\n

One of the meeting participants, MP Mark Tkachuk of the MCP, stated to the press, "The ruling majority parties are unsuccessfully trying to persuade us into voting for their candidate. But we, the largest faction in parliament, are not going to be just dummies in such an important procedure as election of president. The Communists would agree to take part in presidential election only if a candidate is not a representative of the Alliance for European Integration, and only when the entire format of political power in the country changes. This means that Parliament Speaker has to be changed, and that the AEI Government has to retire".<\/p>\n

Tkachuk stressed the Communists accepted the invitation to a dialog sent to them by the Democratic Party, and "today we held a meeting over a cup of coffee to discuss perspectives of cooperation. But we have not reached whatever accord. We exchanged questions, the answers to which were not optimistic for a continuation of cooperation".<\/p>\n

Democratic Party Honorable Chairman MP Dumitru Diacov said that on Wednesday he had a meeting with Mark Tkachuk, ex-adviser to ex-president Voronin, and Vladimir Voronin himself met with the only presidential candidate, Democratic Party Chairman Marian Lupu.<\/p>\n

Diacov said, "We need a dialog, and we are conducting it. So far, we have not agreed upon the Communists’ participation in electing president because they are demonstrating a non-constructive approach to the issue and are putting forth unacceptable conditions – ones aimed at ruining the Alliance for European Integration, which is inadmissible".
