Ukraine and Moldova should boost bilateral cooperation at all levels, the Presidential Secretariat of Ukraine quoted President Viktor Yushchenko as saying on Oct. 9 during his meeting with Moldovan Acting President Mihai Ghimpu in Chisinau.
\n"We are interested in boosting political dialogue at all levels and are ready for cooperation with Moldova on the entire spectre of bilateral relations," Yushchenko said.<\/p>\n

During the talks Yushchenko said: "Ukraine expects that the new leadership of Moldova would demonstrate practical readiness for settling the existing issues in bilateral relations."<\/p>\n

Yushchenko stressed the importance of finishing legal certification of the Ukrainian-Moldovan state border in its entirety including demarcation in the Dniester region.<\/p>\n

The Ukrainian president said that Ukraine is interested in the fastest settling of the Dniester issue on the basis of adhering to the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova. Yushchenko recalled that Ukraine’s stance is reflected in the plan of settling the Dniester conflict. The initiative was proposed by the Ukrainian president in 2005 and has not lost its importance ever since. Yushchenko said that this document may become a basis for a roadmap which will be prepared during the talks on settling the situation in Dniester. He said that the talks on this issue should be resumed in the "5+2" format.<\/p>\n

Yushchenko and Ghimpu said that both countries have a mutual goal, which is the integration to the European Union. In this regard the president expressed Ukraine’s interest in boosting cooperation with Moldova in this field, specifically under the Eastern Partnership initiative, and confirmed his readiness for experience exchange on the European integration politics.<\/p>\n

During his talks with his Moldovan counterpart Yushchenko also spoke in favour of cooperation in cultural and humanitarian sectors. First of all, the president said, this involves protecting the rights of national minorities. Yushchenko paid special attention to the importance of maintaining appropriate conditions for learning Ukrainian in the areas of compact settlement of the ethnic Ukrainians and expressed hopes for expanding cooperation on these issues.
