The international mediators to the Transnistrian conflict settlement (Russia, Ukraine and the OSCE) and observers of the process (the European Union and the United States) have called upon Moldovan and Transnistrian authorities to return to the negotiating table.<\/p>\n

OSCE CIO’s Special Representative Haralampos Christopoulos stated after the 3+2 consultative meeting held in Vienna on Tuesday that the mediators and observers reaffirmed their commitments to rendering assistance to the conflicting sides to achieve a lasting political solution of the Transnistrian conflict – a solution to be based on the Republic of Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and on an agreed-on legal status for Transnistria in conformity with OSCE principles and commitments.<\/p>\n

The Vienna meeting participants called upon Chisinau and Tiraspol to resume talks aimed at achieving a conflict settlement.<\/p>\n

The mediators and observers discussed latest developments in Moldova and voiced readiness to continue work in a close collaboration with both conflicting sides. They urged Chisinau and Tiraspol to restart the activities of trust-building expert groups, and supported the OSCE’s intention to organize a seminar on cooperation between the Moldovan police and Transnistrian militiamen.<\/p>\n

The 5+2 negotiations were suspended in February 2006, and Chisinau and Tiraspol could resume dialog only on April 11, 2008, when Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin and Transnistrian leader Igor Smirnov held in Moscow their first meeting after a 7-year-long pause. At the moment, the negotiation process has been frozen again due to an unusually long, chronic election campaign and a change of government in Moldova.
