Russia is hoping for constructive and good-neighbourly relations with the new Moldovan leadership, but does not intend to alter its position on NATO expansion, the press secretary of the Russian president, Natalya Timakova, told journalists on Wednesday, 30 September.<\/p>\n

"We respect any choice made by the Moldovan people," she said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, asked to comment on the statements made by the Moldovan leadership on possible plans to join NATO, Timakova noted that Russia’s position regarding NATO expansion is well known. "And in this regard we do not intend to change this position," stressed the press secretary.<\/p>\n

"I am very much hoping for constructive and good relations with the new Moldovan leadership. The prerequisites for this are there," said Timakova.<\/p>\n

"We hope that the positive trends in Russian-Moldovan relations will continue," she added.<\/p>\n
