The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has called on the Republic of Moldova’s new authorities and the opposition to enter into negotiations and elect a new president of the republic, it is said in a Report called "The Functioning of Democratic Institutions in Moldova: Implementation of Resolution 1666 (2009)".<\/p>\n

The Parliamentary Assembly has called on the Moldovan authorities to proceed with implementation of Resolution 1666 in accordance with all recommendations given by the Council of Europe.<\/p>\n

The Report authors – Co-Rapporteurs on Moldova Josette Durrieu, (France, Socialist Group) and Egidijus Vareikis (Lithuania, Group of the European People’s Party) – wrote in the document that in its Resolution the Parliamentary Assembly condemned the acts of violence that took place after the April 5 parliamentary elections in Moldova and demanded from the Moldovan authorities to carry out an independent and thorough investigation. In this connection, the PACE welcomed the release of citizens who were arrested in connection with the post-electoral April events in Chisinau.<\/p>\n

The Assembly is concerned about the information disseminated by some Moldovan non-governmental organizations that the authorities are trying to accuse people having a relation to the April 7-8 events, and calls to thoroughly investigate first.<\/p>\n

The PACE presumes Moldova should improve its Electoral Code to create a sound basis for holding free and fair elections in the future.<\/p>\n

The Parliamentary Assembly pointed out also that the July 29 elections changed the proportion of political forces in Moldova. Yet none of parliamentary parties is strong enough to elect a new Moldovan President in parliament independently.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
