Moldova’s new Government is in favour of withdrawing Russian troops from the breakaway Dniester region and replacing the peacekeeping operation with an international mission of civilian observers, as per the Government’s work program presented by Vlad Filat in parliament today.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Filat advocated the preservation of Moldova’s neutrality status, saying that "According to the constitution, Moldova is a neutral state and the government’s action program does not stipulate anything else. In order to give up the status of neutrality, a decision based on people’s will should be taken," Filat said.<\/p>\n

The government advocates a settlement of theTransnistria conflict by assigning the region a special status within Moldova.<\/p>\n

"We speak in favour of settling the conflict in line with Moldova’s legislation and constitution, exclusively by using peaceful means, transparently and democratically," Filat said. "The new government favors the resumption of negotiations in the 5+2 format and will strive for using internal and external resources to reintegrate the country."<\/p>\n

"We must boost the level and quality of living in Moldova and persuade people from the left bank of the Dniester that it is possible to have a prosperous and stable future only within a unitary state – the Republic of Moldova," the program said.<\/p>\n

Filat also spoke in favour of the EU’s more active involvement in the Transnistrian conflict settlement process.
