Moldova’s new Government regards European integration as an absolute priority of the country’s foreign policy.<\/p>\n

Presenting the Government’s action program today, future Prime Minister Vlad Filat said, "We will secure the European integration not at the level of declarations but exclusively by our deeds."<\/p>\n

Filat said the Government intends to obtain the signing of an agreement on association with the EU which would imply the liberalization of the visa regime, free trade and cooperation in ensuring energy security.<\/p>\n

"Our task is to extend Moldova’s circle of friends in the EU in order to secure their support for the settlement of our problems," he said.<\/p>\n

He also pointed out the need to foster cooperation with the neighbouring countries – Romania and Ukraine – and announced intention to complete the process of lifting visas for Romanians, sign an agreement on small-distance cross-border movement with Romania, as well as other bilateral documents. He emphasized, "These documents, including a basic political treaty with Romania, should be based on European norms and standards".<\/p>\n

Filat also referred to the need to cooperate with Russia. "Proceeding from the strategic partnership with Russia, stipulated in the Basic Political Treaty of 2001, the Government is set to deepen economic relations and develop bilateral political dialogue. Relations will be based on pragmatism, mutual benefit, mutual interest and respect," he said.<\/p>\n

He particularly pointed out Russia’s role in settling the conflict with the Dniester region, advocating cooperation in this respect in the five-plus-two format. Filat also noted "the need to develop strategic relations with the USA" to secure its support in the solution of strategic issues, including the European integration issue.
