Moldova’s central budget has not provided in full the funds promised to Gagauzia autonomous region in southern Moldova for 2009, so the region has been forced to formulate its own anti-crisis programme, Gagauzia’s governor Mihail Formuzal has said in an interview with the TSV television channel in Moldova’s breakaway Dniester region.<\/p>\n

Formuzal believes that the ongoing economic crisis has not hit the bottom yet, therefore Gagauzia should be prepared for even harder times.<\/p>\n

He also said that Gagauzia was expecting from the new Moldovan authorities "a constructive and pragmatic dialogue and mutually beneficial cooperation".<\/p>\n

"We want to build our relations with Chisinau in a way ensuring maximum benefits for the autonomy’s residents. We are a small nation and we cannot influence the international geopolitical situation. We just want the Gagauz people to survive and develop, and want our standards of living to meet European requirements," Formuzal said.
\nHe said he hoped that "Gagauzia will find it easier to deal with the new Moldovan authorities even though 65 per cent of the region’s voters cast their ballots for the Communist Party [which is now in opposition] in the latest parliamentary election".<\/p>\n

Formuzal said Gagauz society was a bit anxious over media reports about Moldova’s possible unification with Romania.<\/p>\n

"In my opinion, Europe does not welcome such things in the 21st century. I think the EU will not be silently watching such processes in Moldova," he said.<\/p>\n

Formuzal suggested that that if the law on the legal status of Gagauzia was enforced in full, the autonomy could become a model for other conflict regions.<\/p>\n

"But, alas, Moldova’s central government has made so many errors towards Gagauzia, and the law has never fully worked. Nevertheless, Gagauzia is not going to engage in arguments because of this but will keep on demanding insistently that the law be respected," he said.<\/p>\n

Speaking about prospects for a Dniester settlement, Formuzal said that "the leadership and the people should decide how to build relations between Moldova and the Dniester region".
