Moldova’s accession to NATO or its withdrawal from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) are not the key tasks of the new ruling Alliance for European Integration [that holds 53 out of 101 parliamentary seats], the recently elected speaker of the Moldovan parliament and acting president, Mihai Ghimpu, has said.
\nSpeaking in the "In Depth" programme broadcast by the ProTV-Chisinau private TV channel on 14 September, Ghimpu said that "once Moldova has found itself in the CIS by decrees of fate, this fact cannot be cut with scissors".<\/p>\n

At the same time, he underlined that "NATO is not standing in our parliament’s lobby, waiting for our accession".
\n"So, the dilemma of whether to be with NATO or the CIS is not a question of today. The key objective today is poverty eradication. My heart aches when I see how our pensioners and many other citizens live. However, poverty eradication is not possible as long as the Communists re! main in power, because precisely communism is the reason of poverty. In parallel, we must bring our legislation in line with European standards in order to be able to join the European Union in the future," Ghimpu said.<\/p>\n

According to him, no member of the Alliance for European Integration is putting forward as a first priority the idea of Moldova’s joining NATO or quitting the CIS because "we must first do our utmost to overcome the current crisis, particularly through promoting reforms".<\/p>\n

At the same time, Ghimpu underlined that the new authorities will not continue the policy pursued so far by the Communist Party in relations with Romania.<\/p>\n

"We have to resign ourselves to the thought that, although we are brothers, we are two countries, and each government decides itself what it should do for the good of its citizens. I wish Moldova to attain higher living standards so as to find itself in the European Union next to Romania," Ghimpu said.<\/p>\n

Ghimpu also said that, as the acting president, he will soon sign a decree cancelling visa requirements for Romanian citizens which were introduced on 8 April after the former Communist authorities accused Romania of involvement in the 7 April disturbances.<\/p>\n

"That decision is in breach of an earlier parliamentary resolution on a visa-free regime for all citizens of European Union member states, Romania including. I am convinced that the decision cancelling visas for Romanians will be pleasant news for ethnic minorities living in the Republic of Moldova as well," Ghimpu added.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
