The leader of the Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova (PCRM), Vladimir Voronin, ex-president of the Republic of Moldova, declared in an interview to the Russian radio station ‘Echo Moscvi’ that the United States and Romania had supported the opposition parties in the anticipated parliamentary elections. <\/p>\n

According to the Moldovan ex-president, the USA was interested in removing communists from power in Moldova. <\/p>\n

‘If they provided funds for the abolition of the former Soviet Union, it was not a problem for them to allocate a few million dollars for buying the votes in time of the Moldovan elections’, Vladimir Voronin also said. ‘Emissaries from Bucharest and Washington forced those from the current democratic-liberal coalition to form the Alliance for European Integration’, Voronin declared. <\/p>\n

Vladimir Voronin resigned from the President post on 11 September, after holding two mandates since 2001. In his address to the nation, he spoke about the achievements of communists throughout eight years of governing. Moreover, he made it clear that PCRM would come back.<\/p>\n

The interim president of Republic of Moldova is the Liberal Party leader Mihai Ghimpu, speaker of Parliament.<\/p>\n

Vladimir Voronin was born in 1941 in the village of Corjova, Dub\u0103sari District of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic. Despite his Russified name, his ethnic origins are Romanian and, in fact, he was born with last name Sârbu, but, later he took his Russian stepfather’s last name Voronin. His grandfather Isidor Sârbu was an anticommunist fighter in Romania after 1944.
