Moldova’s ex-President and leader of the Moldovan Communist Party Vladimir Voronin has stated he "would now concentrate all his efforts, attention and time to further consolidate his party and to prepare it for an early parliamentary election".<\/p>\n

In an interview with Russian radio station Ekho Moskvy last weekend, Voronin voiced regret that, as leader of the party, during the last eight years he had not paid enough attention to the political and organizational work inside his party. "But now, that I have become an ordinary MP, I will pay a lot of attention to the party work".<\/p>\n

Voronin said that the Communist Party’s parliamentary faction [that holds 48 out of 101 parliamentary seats] "will never support unpopular laws". "As for our participation in the election of the president, we do not yet have a final decision of the Communist Party’s Central Committee, but I will ask the Central Committee to permit our faction to abstain! from voting for whatever candidate they (the ruling Alliance for European Integration – Infotag) may nominate for the post of president," Voronin said.<\/p>\n

The 53-strong Alliance for European Integration is short of eight votes to elect the president on its own. If parliament fails to elect the country’s new president in two attempts, then the acting president disbands the legislative forum and calls an early election.<\/p>\n

Voronin admitted that conducting three parliamentary elections in less than one year is not an easy task. At the same time, he believes that "Moldova does not deserve such a government and parliament during the next four years it also does not deserve suffering for another four years".<\/p>\n

Vladimir Voronin said he was not afraid that at a new early election his party could win fewer votes than at the 29 July early parliamentary election. "No, the Communist Party will work to create and it will tune people’s minds correctly – for con! tinuing the course of reforms and changes which we had implemented ove r the last eight years".<\/p>\n

He also said he was not afraid of whatever prosecution by the new authorities.<\/p>\n

"What should they prosecute us for? For working as slaves round the clock for seven days a week during the last eight years to raise the republic from chaos and disorder? Firstly, people should not be prosecuted for their ideas, for being Communists or for holding a certain post. Only those who committed violations, offences or crimes should be prosecuted. If such things really happened then those responsible should face trial. We are not going to flirt or bargain with the law here," Voronin said.<\/p>\n

Focusing on the settlement of the conflict with the breakaway Dniester region, Voronin said that his party was working out a programme of measures which "will be implemented irrespective of what the new Moldovan authorities will choose to do".<\/p>\n

"Of course, we would like them to continue our efforts aimed at bringing the two banks! of the Dniester River closer. But such rapprochement is only possible on the basis of trust rather than confrontation. Yet, when one side is offering a unionist program [of Moldova’s unification with Romania], this is absolutely contrary to the task of reunification of the Republic of Moldova," Vladimir Voronin said.<\/p>\n

Voronin also said that he did not even admit the thought that the Dniester region may one day secede from Moldova. "Politician who would propose this should be declared insane and isolated from society," Voronin added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
