The leaders of the 4 political parties, which have formed the parliamentary majority Alliance for European Integration, held consultations today and determined the structure of parliament and the order of distribution of positions.<\/p>\n

An AEI member told Infotag correspondent the Parliament’s structure did not undergo any particular changes. The forum will have an 11-member Permanent Bureau and nine standing committees. The Alliance is going to propose that five committees should be headed by AEI representatives, and 4 – by the Communists. The Communist opposition will be given the possibility to nominate their representative to the position of one of two deputy speakers.<\/p>\n

According to the same source, the AEI leaders decided also they will propose Liberal Democratic Party leader MP Vlad Filat to the post of Prime Minister, and will request him to form Cabinet. A decree to this effect will be signed by Parliament Speaker Mihai Ghimpu next week, when the functions of acting president will be relegated to him.<\/p>\n

Acting President Vladimir Voronin, whose terms of office expired last April 7, must tender resignation because he has become a member of parliament. By law, he must resign not later than 30 days after recognition of his and the entire forum’s parliamentary powers. This deadline expires on September 14, and it is expected that Voronin will officially apply to parliament for resignation on the upcoming Friday, September 11.<\/p>\n

After president’s resignation, the Parliament will have 2 months at its disposal to elect a new president. Our sources in the Alliance are saying the parliamentary majority will not hurry to elect head of state. The legislation contains no precise definition of what needs to be made first – to form a government or elect a president. So, the majority will hold a presidential election only after the Government has been formed.<\/p>\n

The AEI leaders have decided also that Democratic Party Chairman Marian Lupu will be a candidate for presidency. If the Communists refuse to take part in electing president, a new parliamentary election will be held. In such case, the Filat Government will work approximately 6 months – until a new Cabinet is appointed after the 2010 parliamentary elections.
