"Unity between the peoples of Russia and Transnistria", consolidation of economic and friendship ties between them, development of political dialog are among the main objectives the United Russia Party sets before itself, Tatyana Yakovleva, First Deputy Chairwoman of the party’s faction in the Russian State Duma [parliament], stated here today. She is heading a party delegation that has come to take part in the Transnistria’s independence anniversary celebration.<\/p>\n

Yakovleva also highlighted "very strong economic and social ties existing between Russia and Transnistria not solely at the level of governments but between grassroots".<\/p>\n

"Having met with and spoken to the Transnistrians, I came to realize that local people feel strongly attached to Russia spiritually, culturally and politically. No wonder: Transnistria is home to over 135 thousand citizens of Russia. Besides this, thousands of locals go to Russia for jobs. Transnistria and Russia have same historic roots and cultural traditions. The Russian-Transnistrian ties are not just solid, they are inseparable", said the Moscow parliamentarian.<\/p>\n

In her words, Russia has always stood on the position of a fair, peaceful settlement of the "Moldo-Transnistrian dispute".<\/p>\n

"Transnistria’s striving for a civilized, equal-right dialog with Moldova is perceived by us as a correct way in the interests of peace and stability in South East Europe. Only mutual respect at tackling the Transnistria problem can help achieve a consensus. In this situation, one should avoid ‘stepping on the Georgian rake’ or repeating Mikhail Saakashvili’s aggressive attempts. Compromise, dialog and avoidance of extremism are the three whales, on which the resolving of the Transnistria conflict should be based", said the Russian politician.<\/p>\n

Tatyana Yakovleva stressed that the conflict settlement and definition of a legal status for Transnistria are extremely hard questions, but not insoluble ones.
