The new Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, elected at early elections last July 29, had its first session today, August 28.<\/p>\n\n

Communists demanded to announce a pause in the forum’s work until September 4 to continue political consultations. The rest of 4 parties, former opposition that formed the coalition called the Alliance for European Integration having a total of 53 deputies, were strongly against any breaks.<\/p>\n

Communist Party faction of 48 stood up and left the room of the new Moldovan Parliament’s first plenary sitting.<\/p>\n

After Communists left the room, while the rest parliamentarians continued the plenary sitting, the chairing of the session was entrusted to the oldest member of the Liberal Party faction – Ion Hadarca.<\/p>\n

The Parliament formed a commission for electing Speaker. All 4 factions unanimously nominated Liberal Party Chairman Mihai Ghimpu as candidate for that post.<\/p>\n

Ghimpu, 58, a veteran in Moldova’s politics, a member of the first parliament who voted the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Moldova in 1991, ultimately, was elected the speaker of the Moldovan Parliament, through secret voting, getting all 53 votes of Moldova’s pro-Western coalition.<\/p>\n

At the elections, five parliamentary parties overcame a new, 5% electoral barrier and thus won seats in the legislative forum. The Moldovan Communist Party (CPRM) received 48 mandates, the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (LDPM) – 18, the Liberal Party (LP) – 15, the Democratic Party (DP) – 13, and the Moldova Noastra Alliance (MNA) – 7 mandates. To form a parliamentary majority, electe the forum’s governing bodies and form a government it requires minimum of 52 ballots – a half of the 101-member legislature plus one vote.
