It quoted a representative of the Communist Party as saying that the Communists are prepared to cooperate with the coalition and support their nominee for president provided the candidate is not a member of any political party. At the same time, he did not rule out that the new coalition will soon break up failing to cope with the economic crisis in Moldova. The paper also interviewed a spokesman for the new coalition, who ruled out Moldova’s unification with Romania. The following is the text of an article by Iryna Kovalchuk entitled "Moldova will not join Romania" and published in the Ukrainian newspaper Segodnya on 10 August:

The former opposition parties, the Liberal Democratic Party, the Liberal Party, the Democratic Party and Our Moldova Alliance promoting rapprochement with the West, have set up a ruling coalition – the Alliance for European Integration. They have 53 out of 101 seats in parliament and they can elect the speaker and the prime minister. But they will have to elect president soon and they need another eight votes to succeed. If the voting fails, Moldova will deal with another snap election early next year. But the Segodnya paper found out that the Communist Party which has 48 seats in parliament is ready to support the candidate suggested by the coalition. "We are inclined to allocate eight people that would vote for the presidential candidate nominated by the coalition," editor-in-chief of the Moldovan paper Communist Alexandru Isaev has said. "But this is on condition that the nominee is non-affiliated and does not promote policy of a separate party. We understand that endless elections will destroy our state and it all could end up in a split. That is why we will not let the situation trigger a new early election," Isaev said.

Yet, the Communists have not lost hope to return to power. According to Isaev, it is yet unclear for how long the coalition will exist. "In 1998, we were only 40 in parliament, but then the coalition fell apart within several months. This alliance could stop existing even quicker and then, I hope, a grand coalition would be set up," he said.
"We suggest that the Communists just move into opposition and give the coalition a chance to work during the crisis and then try to use their control over the media, their strong position in parliament and in various administrative bodies where they have their people so that in six months or a year to take revenge when the opposition will be recovering after the inevitable economic crisis. Currently, at the possible early election, they [the Communists] risk mustering even fewer votes as the myth about their omnipotence has been dispelled and they cannot use the administrative resource so efficiently," a member of the Democratic Party, Andrei Popov, believes.
Isaev is neither concerned about the foreign policy of the new government which, according to the Communists, will be pro-Romanian (the aim is to integrate Moldova into Romania). "During the crisis they will have no time to think about integration with Romania or about military actions against the [breakaway] Dniester region. Generally speaking, these parties are like amoebas, they are incapable of any daring moves. They will just follow the crowd until they are given a kick," Isaev said.

However, the coalition said it is ready for constructive dialogue with both Romania and the Dniester region. "Our core task is the quickest possible integration into Europe and accomplishment of all reforms necessary for this," Andrei Popov said. "But I want to note that any alliance or even unification with Romania is ruled out.
