Moldovan acting President Vladimir Voronin has spoken in favour of developing cooperation within the CIS. In an interview with the Russian news agency Interfax on 27 July, Voronin said, "It is necessary to develop cooperation within the CIS, set and observe clear and simple rules that will help us jointly overcome difficulties."<\/p>\n

"Over the past years, the CIS passed through different periods. It saw the difficult years of disintegration, crisis in relations, mistakes and blunders. And now all the CIS members grew up and have got the capacity to draw conclusions and learn from the committed mistakes," Voronin said. "The present times do not only offer big opportunities, they also pose various challenges, which we should be able to deal with".<\/p>\n

"I am speaking about the economic crisis, threats to security and restrictions of the main freedoms. And we all convinced ourselves that jointly it is much easier and more effective to fight agains! t the present challenges," Voronin said. "All CIS countries’ agendas include a common and extremely up-to-date issue: to step up forces to oppose the world economic crisis."<\/p>\n

"For all of us, it is important not only to overcome the crisis’ consequences, but also to protect people from its negative impact and preserve the existing social guarantees. It is absolutely natural that in close cooperation, it will be much easier for the CIS countries to achieve positive results in the fight against the crisis," Voronin said.<\/p>\n

Voronin said that during his latest visit to Moscow (18 July) he discussed these problems as well as the preparation for the summit of the CIS heads of state, due in Chisinau in October.
