Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, Russian President Dmitriy Medvedev and acting Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin enjoy the highest confidence among Moldova’s population, according to a "Barometer of public opinion" poll made public on July 20. <\/p>\n

As many as 77.9 per cent of respondents said they trusted Putin, 73.4 per cent Medvedev and 44.4 per cent Voronin. They are followed by US President Barack Obama with 36.5 per cent, Romanian President Traian Basescu with 33.3 per cent, French President Nicolas Sarkozy with 32.4 per cent, German Chancellor Angela Merkel with 31 per cent and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi with 30.7 per cent. <\/p>\n

As many as 52 per cent of respondents said Russia should be Moldova’s strategic partners (down by 8 per cent compared with March 2009). Russia is followed by the EU with 26.2 per cent (up by 6 per cent), Romania with 10.8 per cent (up by 3.2 per cent), the USA with 2 per cent, and Ukraine with 1.8 per cent. <\/p>\n

Over 80 per cent of respondents described Moldova’s current relations with Russia as good. Half of respondents said that Moldova established good relations with Ukraine, over half with the EU and 45 per cent with the USA. Only 24 per cent of the population believe that Moldova has good relations with Romania. <\/p>\n

If a referendum on accession to the EU were held next Sunday, 65 per cent of Moldovans would have voted for it, 16.7 per cent against and 13 per cent have not decided yet. <\/p>\n

Over 57 per cent of respondents said that the best solution to Moldova’s security is its neutrality and 16.6 per cent named accession to NATO. If a referendum on accession to NATO were held next Sunday, 46.4 per cent of Moldovans would have voted against, 20.7 per cent in favour and the others have not decided yet.<\/p>\n

The poll was conducted by the Institute of Public Policies among 1,534 respondents between 26 June and 10 July. The margin of error is 2.5 per cent.
