The Moldovan opposition Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) has said that "the ruling Communist Party’s actions aimed at splitting society per national criteria, looking for an imaginary external enemy and promoting the idea of Moldova’s eventual disappearance as an independent state are harming and delaying the settlement of the conflict with the Dniester region".<\/p>\n

PLDM leader Vlad Filat told a news conference today that "the Communists’ policy aimed at artificially dividing society by ethnic criteria nourishes the erroneous arguments of the self-proclaimed Dniester authorities".<\/p>\n

"All these years, the Dniester regime has insistently promoted the idea of Romania’s eventual "expansion", thus manipulating the public opinion on the left bank of the Dniester. The groundless attacks against Romania by the regime of [acting President and Communist leader] Vladimir Voronin and the fact that Romania has been regarded as an external enemy are s! tepping up the separatist positions of the Tiraspol leaders," he said.<\/p>\n

Filat noted that "attempts to legalize Russia’s military presence on the left bank of the Dniester reduces the chances of a fair settlement of the conflict with the Dniester region and undermines the efforts taken by the Western mediators and observers to this end".<\/p>\n

"The PLDM condemns the irresponsible actions by the Communist government, which is ready to sacrifice the national interests and Moldova’s territorial integrity and sovereignty just to get some short-lived electoral dividends. The PLDM asks for halting destructive attacks which endanger the country’s future," the PLDM leader said.
\nFilat added that the PLDM "distinguishes itself by a clear-cut approach and a specific action programme of settling the conflict with the Dniester region, which provides for: the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of the Russian troops and armament; transparent negotiations with the active part! icipation of mediators and their subsequent role of guarantors; the tr ansformation of the trilateral peacekeeping mission [including Russian, Moldovan and Dniester peacekeepers] into an international civil mission under the EU’s aegis; the demilitarization and democratization of the Dniester districts and their subsequent accession to Moldova".
