The electronic press has the right to decide when to start election debates. This is a new provision of the election coverage blueprint approved by the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) on June 23. <\/p>\n

The CEC meeting that started on 22 June evening was concluded today. The CEC members and representatives of the election contenders could not reach a consensus regarding the concept of covering the campaign for the 29 July snap parliamentary election. After hour-long discussions, the CEC approved the document today. Unlike the blueprint for the previous election campaign, this one does not oblige the broadcasting companies to start debates after the registration of all election contenders. As CEC secretary Iurie Ciocan said, the radio and TV stations have the right to decide by themselves when to start election debates provided that they announce the CEC about their decision at least 48 hours before the debates.<\/p>\n

Another amendment to the blueprint concerns the examination of litigations between election contenders and media outlets.<\/p>\n

"Litigations concerning the coverage of the campaign by media and litigations occurring between election contenders and media outlets will be examined by courts and not by the CEC," Iurie Ciocan, CEC secretary, said.<\/p>\n

The public TV and radio institutions must organize election debates, while the private ones have the right to do so. The electronic media outlets that do not want to cover the election campaign must inform the CEC and the Audio Visual Council about this within three days after the publication of the document. The media outlets will have to weekly inform the CEC about the amount of electoral advertising.
