South Ossetian ‘president’ Eduard Kokoyty has thanked the leader of Moldova’s breakaway Dniester (Transnistria) Igor Smirnov for the assistance rendered by the republic after the Georgian aggression in August 2008 Georgian-Russian war.<\/p>\n

"The start of the Year of the Dniester Moldovan Republic in South Ossetia has laid a very good foundation for the integration of our peoples and our states. Your fraternal help after the Georgian aggression has heartened us," Kokoyty said on Tuesday, 16 June, during his meeting with Smirnov in Tskhinvali during the closing ceremony of the Year of Dniester.<\/p>\n

He also thanked the heads of the ministries and agencies of Dniester and South Ossetia for the work that was conducted over the course of the past year.<\/p>\n

For his part, Smirnov, in an address to the cabinet of ministers of South Ossetia, expressed thanks for the work that had been done. "In each trip there is something that you take back not just for yourself, but also for your people and your state. Walking along the streets of Tskhinvali today, one voluntarily or involuntarily recalls the events that took place in our country. I should congratulate you on [the recognition of] your independence; the will of your people, your leader, your people have passed the test not only of survival but also of future life," Smirnov stressed. <\/p>\n

During the meeting, Kokoyty and Smirnov signed a protocol adding to the 1994 agreement on friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance. Also signed were interagency agreements between the ministries of finance, education and youth affairs, and press, and the prosecutor-general’s offices of South Ossetia and the Dniester Moldovan republic.<\/p>\n

Later, the guests laid wreaths at the obelisk at school No 5, where victims of the Georgian aggression are buried. They also plan to visit the ethnographic centre, where the ethnographic festival "Heritage of Our Forefathers" will be held. After that, the Dniester symphonic orchestra will perform a concert in Tskhinvali and a gala concert will be held this evening at Theatre Square.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
