Acting Moldovan President and parliament speaker Vladimir Voronin is confident of the Communist Party’s victory in an early parliamentary election. He was speaking to journalists after June 3 sitting in parliament when MPs failed to elect the country’s new president] as it became clear that a snap election was inevitable.<\/p>\n

"We were against an early election and did our best to avoid it. However, the opposition pressed for it even against its will. Its members were encouraged by forces which sponsored them during the previous election and which attempted a coup. And they will try to win more seats in parliament in the new election. All these are links of one chain," Voronin said.<\/p>\n

He said that the 7 April riots "were an attempt to stage a coup, but the Prosecutor-General’s Office and a special state commission must have their final say on this".<\/p>\n

"The commission is working and we have invited representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the European Commission to help it," Voronin said. <\/p>\n

He added that during an early election "the Communist Party would get 80 per cent of votes in new parliament".
\n"We hope that people will understand how difficult the situation is and will understand what has happened and whose interests are behind this. The election will show who is worth what. I want to say that we have never deprived anyone of any vote. There is no mechanism for rigging polls and our victory was the result of our joint efforts," Voronin said.<\/p>\n

He said he will sign the decree dissolving parliament and appointing the date for the snap election after the government is formed on 10 June. Voronin made it clear that the early parliamentary election could take place in August.
