On Wednesday, June 3, the Moldovan parliament failed in its second attempt to elect Moldova’s new president.<\/p>\n

All 60 members of the Communist Party of the Republic of Moldova (PCRM) in parliament voted for Zinaida Greceanîi, Communist Prime Minister. The second candidate was Andrei Negu\u0163\u0103, Moldovan Ambassador to Russia, but no vote was casted for him. Both candidates were proposed by the Communist parliamentary group.<\/p>\n

"60 deputies received voting bulletins, all of which were introduced in the voting box, and none of which was considered invalid," said Valeriu Sava, chairman of the special Commission for the organization of the presidential elections.<\/p>\n

The Communists needed just one vote to secure victory in this election for president. Grecianîi first bid for presidency fell one vote short, the second ballot was postponed and now, the third attempt also failed.<\/p>\n

Three opposition liberal and pro-European parties hold a combined total of 41 seats of 101-memebr parliament. Therefore, the opposition has managed to boycott the vote and lead to repeated parliamentary elections. They accused the Communist government of electoral fraud and severe human rights violations against post-election protesters. <\/p>\n

President in office, the chairman of parliament of Moldova and the chair of PCRM, Vladimir Voronin, said that now, after the voting, there are all prerequisites for dissolving current parliament and setting the date of early parliamentary elections. The constitution does not specify when this must be done.<\/p>\n

On April 5th, Moldova held parliamentary elections. While the government claims that the ruling Communist Party won 49 percent of the vote and OSCE\/ODIHR concluded that the voting process met “many international commitments,” the political opposition, civil society and international observers have noted credible cases of fraud and the misuse of administrative resources, biased news by state-run media, and problems with voter lists. In this polarizing situation, thousands of mostly young people took to the streets to protest the results. Following violence and vandalism of the parliament and presidential buildings, an ensuing crackdown led to hundreds of young people being arrested, scores beaten and some killed.
