Acting president and parliament speaker Vladimir Voronin said on Thursday that he would not back the return to the presidential republic and would carry through the power reform. <\/p>\n

Voronin told journalists on Thursday that he opposes a presidential form of government in Moldova.<\/p>\n

"I was one of those who in 2000 supported constitutional amendments providing for Moldova’s transformation into a parliamentary republic," he said.<\/p>\n

Voronin said he has a package of proposals concerning how "to further improve the parliamentary form of government".<\/p>\n

"These documents will allow carrying through the power reform in the country and creating a genuine parliamentary republic," Voronin said.<\/p>\n

Moldova has been de jure a parliamentary state but de facto a presidential republic over the last eight years after the Communist Party overwhelmingly won the 2001 and 2005 parliamentary elections and was able to appoint its representatives to all three key posts in the state: president, prime minister and speaker of parliament.<\/p>\n

On 28 May, the ruling Communist majority in the Moldovan parliament postponed the second attempt to elect the country’s new president until 3 June. The Communists nominated acting Prime Minister Zinaida Greciani and envoy to Russia Andrei Neguta for the post of president. <\/p>\n

The first attempt to elect the president failed as the opposition boycotted the election. The deadline for the election of the president is 7 June.
