The leader of the opposition Our Moldova Alliance, Serafim Urechean, has said that he wants to become Moldova’s new president. <\/p>\n

"The alliance is ready to begin talks with the Communist Party (PCRM) if an opposition representative is nominated for president" Urechean said.<\/p>\n

The AMN leader said he was "ready to become the opposition’s candidate for president". <\/p>\n

"We were the only parliamentary party which did not betray its voters in 2005 when most opposition parties cast their ballots for a Communist president. We are not going to betray this time either," Urechean said.<\/p>\n

He said that if the Communists do not table serious proposals for the opposition parties, "they will lose important state posts of the president, parliament speaker and prime minister" after a snap parliamentary election.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM), Vlad Filat, told journalists on Thursda! y: "The postponement of the parliamentary meeting for 3 June should not have been linked with Holy Ascension, but with the Communists’ fear to assume responsibility for their eight years in power in Moldova."<\/p>\n

"I regret that the PCRM is resorting to such cheap actions and tricks in order to meet their political goals," Filat said.<\/p>\n

He said that the PLDM supported the idea of holding an early parliamentary election and the party would push for it. <\/p>\n

For his part, the leader of the Liberal Party (PL), Mihai Ghimpu, said that the Comminists had only one goal when delaying the election until 3 June: to find one vote, which the PCRM is short of to elect the president in parliament.
\n"If there is a problem linked with Holy Ascension, then the Communists should have thought about this when they were setting the date for the second attempt to elect the president. They are in agony and are looking for the lacking vote," Ghimpu said.<\/p>\n

He noted that the PL received "childish and naive proposals" from the PCR M concerning "the country’s salvation".
\nHe said that the parliamentary opposition was more consolidated than ever and will push for an early parliamentary election.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, 28 May, the Moldovan parliament postponed the presidential election for 3 June following a proposal by the ruling Communist Party. The ruling majority nominated acting Prime Minister Zinaida Greciani and envoy to Russia Andrei Neguta for the post of president. The first round of the election was a failure as the opposition boycotted it. <\/p>\n

According to legislation, if a new president is not elected in the second attempt, the acting president has to disband parliament and set the date for a snap parliamentary election, which should be held in 45 days after the president’s relevant decree comes in effect. Then the election should be held in August or September.
