Researchers from Stanford University (California) are studying the experience of using informational technologies (IT) at organizing post-electoral civil disturbances in the Moldovan capital last 6-7 April. <\/p>\n

On 3-5 June, Stanford professor Howard Rheingold will present some results of this research on the Deutsche Welle Radio and at the Global Media Forum due in Bonn. He will focus essentially on the capacity of a socio-technical revolution to unite and mobilize citizens of the world or to split a society. <\/p>\n

Rheingold will present the experience of using the Internet and telephone communications in the organization of manifestations in the Philippines that led to a downthrow of the president, as well as in Korea, Spain and Chile that influenced election outcomes. <\/p>\n

Professor Rheingold says the possibilities of new telecommunication methods are as wonderful as they may be dangerous, even though this danger is not always apparent and is not directly related to aims of using the Internet and cellular communication. <\/p>\n

He is the author of a new term that has already gained popularity in the world ‘smart mobs’, which he defined as small and large groups of people using cellular telephony and the Internet for organizing joint actions, with a rapidity and scale of mobilization unheard of in the past. <\/p>\n

The Moldovan authorities are claiming the riots and the pogroms of official buildings in downtown Chisinau last 7 April were organized by using the Internet and SMS. Nearly 30 thousand young people gathered in one place amazingly quickly, and eventually inflicted to the State Budget a damage exceeding half a billion lei.
