The opposition did not have the right to take the floor, therefore, the only voices that were heard were those of Communist MP Ivan Calin, who chaired the meeting, and of the chairman of the Constitutional Court, who presented a report on the results of the election.<\/p>\n[Passage omitted: reported details]\n[Mihai Gimpu, captioned as leader of the Liberal Party, speaking to journalists after the meeting] We were convened, they came, spoke and left. This means the usurpation of power and dictatorship in the Republic of Moldova.<\/p>\n[Vlad Filat, captioned as leader of the Liberal Democratic Party] Normally, at least the speaker of parliament should have been elected today. I understand, in fact I am convinced, that there is no unity within the Communist Party.<\/p>\n[Serafim Urechean, captioned as leader of the Our Moldova Alliance] During con! sultations within the Communist Party this morning, Voronin failed to get 52 votes necessary to elect the parliamentary speaker, therefore, they urgently cancelled this meeting.<\/p>\n[Vladimir Turcan, captioned as Communist MP] Under regulations, [MPs] are not allowed to take the floor.
\n[Passage omitted: Parliamentary factions are to be created until the next parliamentary sitting scheduled for 12 May.]\n[Correspondent] Today’s parliamentary meeting was attended by 98 out of 101 deputies. Communist MP [and acting Foreign and European Integration Minister] Andrei Stratan is on a working visit to Moscow where he met his Russian counterpart [Sergey Lavrov].<\/p>\n

Veaceslav Platon of the Our Moldova Alliance announced that he was on a business trip, although he was not in the country during the election campaign either. Earlier, the Prosecutor-General’s Office put Platon on an international wanted list. Businessman Veaceslav Platon, who is a dep! uty chairman of a Moldovan bank, but who also enjoys parliamentary imm unity, is accused of large-scale embezzlement. Platon denies the accusations.
\nThe third deputy who did not participate in the session was Liberal Party deputy leader [and Chisinau mayor] Dorin Chirtoaca, who announced that he gave up his deputy mandate.<\/p>\n
