The three opposition parties that made it to parliament after the 5 April election – the Liberal Party, the Liberal Democratic Party and the Our Moldova Alliance – have confirmed their intention to boycott the election of Moldova’s new president and call for an early parliamentary election. The leaders of the three parties stated this after parliament’s first plenary sitting today. <\/p>\n

Liberal Party leader Mihai Ghimpu told journalists that "the country has no legitimately elected state power, therefore, it is necessary to hold a new election". "No matter what result an election may bring, it is necessary to hold it to elect parliament legally but not through frauds as was the case on 5 April," Ghimpu said. <\/p>\n

Commenting on the refusal of Communist MP Ivan Calin, who chaired today’s meeting, to give him the floor, Mihai Ghimpu stated that "this is extra evidence of the level of democracy in Moldova, and of the so-called ‘dialogue with! the opposition’".<\/p>\n

"The Communists told me that I would have a chance to speak in parliament yet. Now I would like to tell them that I will certainly have enough time to carry out other tasks, too, including liberating Moldova from Communists," Ghimpu said.<\/p>\n

For his part, Liberal Democratic Party leader Vlad Filat stated that "nothing and nobody may force the opposition to vote for the president". Answering journalists’ questions, he said the "opposition has established a normal dialogue with international organizations, but even they cannot oblige the opposition to take part in the election of the president".<\/p>\n

Our Moldova Alliance leader Serafim Urechean stated that the "decision to adjourn the election of the speaker until next week is an indication of differences existing within the Communist Party". <\/p>\n

"The Communists began it badly, so badly will they finish. They are short of votes [to elect the president], while Communist Part! y leader Vladimir Voronin has not yet decided what post to occupy: tha t of parliament speaker or prime minister. So, he took extra time for thinking. But to my mind, it would be better for him to remain just an ordinary MP as in such a case it will be easier to deprive him of parliamentary immunity and sue him for all the wrongdoings committed as president," Urechean said. <\/p>\n

"There is no unity in the Communist Party ranks, therefore, they decided to delay for a week the election of parliament’s working bodies scheduled for today," Urechean said. "We will not participate in the election of the president or [accept] posts in parliament. We cannot be bribed and we are not for sale. As we have promised, we are participating in legislative work, but not more than this.
