Mirek Topolánek, President of the European Council, as Czech Republic holds EU Presidency, answering questions on May 4, posed by an user in the European chat, avoided a direct answer on Moldova.<\/p>\n

Asked if Topolánek "personally consider the recent unrest in the Moldovan capital as an expression of state tyranny or as inability of the defeated party to accept its defeat in election", he decided to generalize the answer<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Topolánek: "All countries of the future Eastern Partnership project have their internal problems and we can only speculate as to how they are influenced by the proximity of their Eastern neighbour. The countries of the former Soviet Union are, and if we let them they will remain, in the sphere of influence of the Russian Federation: Ukraine and the gas crisis, Belarus and the Lukashenko regime, Moldova and the post-election situation + Transnistria, Georgia and the occupation of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, Armenia and Azerbaijan and the problem of Nagorno-Karabakh. We have only two choices: either to let the countries deal with these problems or attempt to introduce a specific model of cooperation with the EU in the area of better administration, human rights and economic, social and visa-related cooperation. The Belarusian opposition itself welcomes the Eastern Partnership project – I have spoken repeatedly with its representatives in person. It is a question of a bigger or lesser evil."<\/em><\/p>\n

On April 22, Mr Topolánek met Communist Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin in the capital Chisinau. He also met with opposition leaders, who handed him documents on what they claim to be hard facts about election fraud and police violence. Czech premier Mirek Topolánek called for an EU-led probe into the post-election violence in Moldova during that visit. Mr Topolánek’s call for a broad inquiry commission is what opposition leaders have called for. <\/p>\n

Czech Prime Minister received in Moldova evidence of what opposition said was 20,000 rigged ballots and a file with the photos of protesters whom they claim were badly beaten or even killed by the police.<\/p>\n

"The European Union is monitoring the situation in Moldova.
