The Moldovan Constitutional Court (CC) has passed a decision on a complete recount of votes cast in the April 5 parliamentary election.<\/p>\n

At a meeting held on Sunday, the CC ruled that the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) has nine days, starting Sunday, to recount all the votes. The CC decision is final and cannot be appealed.<\/p>\n

Speaking to journalists, CC chairman Dumitru Pulbere said that "the decision on vote recount presumes the checking of election rolls" on which the three opposition parties which made it to parliament have been insisting.<\/p>\n

Pulbere said that the CC gave the CEC nine days to recount the votes because under the legislation in effect the CC should approve the results of the election within 10 days since they were received from the CEC (on April 12 – Infotag).<\/p>\n

Asked by Infotag about the possibility to extend this deadline, Pulbere said that "such a decision could be taken only by court following a request by the CEC".<\/p>\n

"At the same time, we cannot endlessly extend the deadlines set by the legislation," Pulbere said.<\/p>\n

As already reported by Infotag, the proposal to recount the votes was put forward by President Vladimir Voronin who believes that "such a step would allow to stabilize the situation in the country and create a constructive atmosphere for activities of the newly-elected parliament".<\/p>\n

According to the final results, four parties had won seats in parliament: the Communist Party with 49.48 per cent of the vote; the Liberal Party, with 13.14 per cent of the vote; the Liberal Democratic Party, with 12.43 per cent of the vote, and the Moldova Noastra Alliance, with 9.77 per cent of the vote. A total of 1,555,557 people, or 59.5 per cent of the electorate, cast their votes.
