The leader of the opposition Moldova Noastra Alliance, Serafim Urechean, told a protest rally held in Moldovan capital Chisinau on Sunday that "it was the Communists rather than the opposition who tried to carry out a coup d’etat in Moldova" on April 7.<\/p>\n

Urechean said that the April 6-7 mass riots in Chisinau have been plotted by the ruling Communist Party which was trying to divert people’s attention from the serious problems faced by Moldova.<\/p>\n

"They are trying to divert attention from their silly and irresponsible governance which has brought Moldova to the brink of bankruptcy," Urechean said.<\/p>\n

He also said that the opposition and society have enough evidence proving that the parliament building and the presidential administration were stormed on the Communists’ order.<\/p>\n

According to Urechean, the Communists have taken advantage of the riots to move Moldova away from the EU and worsen relations with neighbouring Romania. The ruling Communist Party has put on Romania part of the blame for the riots. As a result the Romanian ambassador to Moldova has been expelled and visas for Romanian citizens have been introduced.<\/p>\n

"Now the Communists are trying to establish an iron curtain between Moldova and the EU, in particular in relations with Romania. But we will not allow this to happen," Urechean said.<\/p>\n

He also said that through their actions the Communists are widening the gap between the two banks of the Dniester river, compromising the idea of Moldova’s integration with its breakaway Transnistrian region.<\/p>\n

The rally is organized by the three opposition parties which made it to parliament after the 5 April parliamentary election, but which will have a minority there.
