 Appeal of the Ukraine’s civil society to the leadership of the European Union<\/strong><\/p>\n

To: European Commission; Council of Europe; European Parliament<\/p>\n

Through the last days, civil society in Ukraine has been observing the development of the election crisis in Moldova, which is turning into confrontation between the population and Moldova’s authorities. On Tuesday, 7 April 2009 the conflicting sides used brutal force on both sides, what indicated a possibility of escalation of violence in this conflict.<\/p>\n

Remembering the situation in the 2004 presidential elections, we would like to underline the extreme importance of the EC negotiation group in finding a reaching a peaceful agreement between conflicting parties in Ukraine. As we know now without a timely and pro-active involvement of the EC negotiation group the Orange revolution could have taken a different route and human casualties were inevitable. The European Union along with other international players brought the leverage in the negotiation processes regarding a re-run of the 2004 presidential elections in Ukraine and introduced credibility in respecting the reached agreements between the conflicting parties.<\/p>\n

Members of civil society of Ukraine believe that the European Union should take an active role in facilitating peaceful negotiations between the Communist Party and the new opposition in Moldova. The European Union has international credibility in experience in assisting conflicting parties to find a consensus in settling a dispute. Appearance of a trusted negotiation group from the European Union in Moldova is a precondition for ceasing the violence and for starting negotiations between Moldova’s authorities and the opposition, which is supported by the street protestors. Taking into consideration high regards for the European Union in Moldova, there is a high probability that the population of Moldova will accept the agreement, reached by conflicting parties.<\/p>\n

The European Union has declared its will to form a zone of security, stability and prosperity in the neighbouring countries by accepting the European Neighbourhood Policy and recently adopting the Eastern Partnership Initiative. Based on these initiatives, the Ukrainian civil society urges immediate involvement of the European Union in post-election crises in Moldova, to facilitate the negotiation and legitimate political processes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
