The Liberal Party, the Liberal Democratic Party and the Moldova Noastra Alliance – the three opposition parties which made it to parliament after the 5 April parliamentary election in Moldova but which will hold a minority there – will stage a rally in the centre of Chisinau on Sunday, April 12, at 1100.<\/p>\n

The leaders of the three parties made statements to this affect at a joint news conference held on Saturday, April 11, at the Infotag news agency.<\/p>\n

The opposition leaders said that the goal of the rally is to inform the society about the situation in Moldova, in particular about the latest events (mass riots followed by the ransacking of the parliament building and the presidential administration on April 7 – Infotag) and the arrest of hundreds of innocent children by police.<\/p>\n

The leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, Vlad Filat, has said that the arrested children "are forced to testify that politicians paid them money in order to participate in rallies".<\/p>\n

"We know that hundreds of people have been arrested in Chisinau. They are being caught in the street and taken into an unknown direction. Their relatives do not know where they are, they are not allowed to speak to lawyers, while judges come to police commissariats to issue arrest warrants," Filat said.<\/p>\n

The leader of the Moldova Noastra Alliance, Serafim Urechean, said that at the rally the opposition parties "we will ask the authorities to release the children and stop torture and terror against them". He added that these children are "political prisoners of the Communist dictatorship".<\/p>\n

"Even if these children are guilty they need a fair trial. But now the authorities use force against these people to persuade them to give evidence. Their methods of work remind about the methods used in 1937," Urechean said.<\/p>\n

The leader of the Liberal Party, Mihai Ghimpu, expressed bewilderment over the fact that "Communist Party, which reportedly won the elections, is using force against its own citizens".<\/p>\n

"The behavior of the Communist authorities towards children can be described as genocide against the own nation," Ghimpu said.<\/p>\n

He showed journalists a picture featuring the back of a young man full of bruises. He said that that was a young man who is studying abroad and who arrived in Chisinau to vote and was working as interpreter for foreign journalists.<\/p>\n

Ghimpu said that the opposition parties ask the Communist Party to provide the list of all the arrested people and the accusations brought against them.<\/p>\n

"Our rally will be directed against President Vladimir Voronin and the Communist dictatorial regime in Moldova," Ghimpu stated.<\/p>\n

He underlined that initially the opposition parties gave up their intention to stage rallies.<\/p>\n

"But in this situation we cannot watch the events from the sidelines. We must express our attitude towards what is happening, we must defend people and democracy," Ghimpu said.<\/p>\n

The opposition leaders said that the rally will be peaceful and will be attended by "those who do not agree with the Communist dictatorship".<\/p>\n

"We appeal to the Interior Ministry to allow people from provinces to come to Chisinau on Sunday. We also call on the so-called public company Teleradio-Moldova to broadcast live the rally," he said.<\/p>\n

Asked by journalists how many people are expected to participate in the Sunday rally, Urechean said that "tomorrow’s rally is only the beginning, there will be thousands of hundreds and even millions" in the future.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Vlad Filat said that on Monday (13 April) he will sue President Vladimir Voronin in order to oblige him through court to apologize to parties and the whole nation for the ungrounded accusations. Voronin has said that the opposition was behind mass riots and the ransacking of the state buildings.<\/p>\n

"I will achieve this even if I will have to reach the European Court of Human Rights," he said.<\/p>\n

The leaders of the opposition also asked for the creation of an independent investigation commission to include representatives of the EU, the Council of Europe, the OSCE and the USA which "should objectively establish what were the reasons for the riots".<\/p>\n

"We have absolutely no doubts that the riots have been plotted by the Communists. There are many questions about this. And only a special independent commission could give answer to these questions," Urechean said.<\/p>\n

Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu recalled journalists that the state, Republic of Moldova, "has been created by us, while the Communists were against".<\/p>\n
