An aviation park in China is to commemorate the U.S. Flying Tigers<\/Q> who aided the Chinese during World War II, say officials in Lingui County.<\/P>

The 42-acre park is being built at the Yangtang airport where the squadron’s planes were based during the war, Xinhua, China’s state-run news agency reported Monday.<\/P>

The site is about 15 miles from Guilin in southwest China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.<\/P>

Flying Tigers was the nickname of the 1st American Volunteer Group of the Chinese air force. <\/P>

The squadron, comprising former U.S. Marine, Army and Navy pilots, formed in 1941 under the leadership of U.S. Army Air Corps Gen. Claire Chennault to help China oust invading Japanese troops. The Tigers comprised three fighter squadrons with about 20 planes each. <\/P>

A U.S. group dedicated to preserving the memory of the Flying Tigers has pledged to raise $400,000 for the park and to donate items used by the pilots.<\/P><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
