Macedonia’s presidential and local elections during the weekend were conducted without violence, unlike last year’s voting, officials said.<\/P>

Security was tight for the election, in contrast to last June’s elections, which were marked by fraud and gunfights, leaving one person dead, Radio Free Europe reported Monday.<\/P>

The broadcaster quoted Macedonian election commission officials as saying that with more than half the votes counted, Gjorge Ivanov of the ruling center-right VMRO-DPMNE party had 36 percent, leading Ljubomir Frckovski of the main opposition Social Democrats and former Interior Minister Ljube Boskoski.<\/P>

Although Ivanov held a clear lead to replace President Branko Crvenkovski, who is stepping down after just one term, he did not appear to have enough votes to claim victory in the first round, election officials said.<\/P>
