A measure introduced in the British Parliament would protect those who accompany family members to suicide clinics overseas.<\/P>

The amendment was introduced Friday by Patricia Hewitt, a Labor member of Parliament who served as health secretary for two years, and is expected to be debated Monday. It has support from members of the Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties, The Times of London reported.<\/P>

There have been several recent high-profile cases involving Britons ending their lives at the Dignitas clinic in Switzerland. The Court of Appeal recently ruled against Debbie Purdy, a woman with multiple sclerosis who sought a guarantee that her husband would not be prosecuted if he traveled to Switzerland with her.<\/P>

Peter Saunders, head of the Care Not Killing Alliance, said Hewitt’s amendment might make the chronically ill more vulnerable to pressure.<\/P>

The government is, commendably, trying to protect vulnerable people by tightening up the Suicide Act to outlaw Internet Web sites that encourage suicide,<\/Q> he said. And yet here we have the euthanasia lobby trying, at the same time and in the same bill, to encourage suicide by removing any risk of prosecution for anyone assisting someone to go abroad for euthanasia or assisted suicide. <\/Q><\/P><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
