More than 3,000 U.S. Postal Service jobs will be cut and one-quarter of the USPS workforce offered early retirement, postal officials say.<\/P>

The moves, announced Friday, came as the USPS struggles with financial losses and dwindling mail volume amid a worsening economy, CNN reported.<\/P>

The job cuts will include 1,400 district administrative staff positions as well as another 1,400 mail processing and management jobs, while more than 500 employees will laid off as six district administration-only offices are closed, the postal officials said, adding they hope to save $100 million annually with the job cuts.<\/P>

USPS reported a net loss of $384 million in its fiscal first quarter ending Dec. 31, which it blamed on a 9.3 percent drop in mail volume — some 5.2 billion fewer pieces.
