Just over half of U.S. adults favor the Employee Free Choice Act, which would ease union organizing, the Gallup Poll indicated Tuesday.<\/P>

In a survey of 1,024 people, Gallup found 53 percent support the proposed law, while 39 percent oppose it. The response was partisan with 70 percent of Democrats in favor and 60 percent of Republicans against, while independents break 52 percent to 41 percent.<\/P>

The bill would allow unions to be certified once a majority of the eligible workers at an employer have signed authorization cards. The current law requires a secret ballot.<\/P>

Business lobbyists say the secret ballot protects employees from being pressured into supporting a union against their beliefs.<\/P>

Only 12 percent of those polled said they are following news on the bill very closely and 22 percent somewhat closely.<\/P>
