Romania and the United States consider that the Transdniestria conflict settlement talks should be held in the 5+2 format. Such a position was expressed by the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Euroasian Affairs David Merkel and the Secretary of State of the Romanian Foreign Ministry Raduta Matache. <\/p>\n

According to a communiqué from the Romanian Foreign Ministry, David Merkel visited Bucharest on Monday and took part in a round of consultations on the prospects of solving the Transdniestrian dispute.

\nThe visit comes in the wake of statements made in Moscow that the Russian officials want to intervene in the resolution of the Transdniestrian dispute by reactivating the Kozak Plan that Moldova rejected in 2003 at the insistence of the West. The Kozak Plan proposed by Moscow provided for the creation of a federal state. <\/p>\n

"The two delegations reiterated their support for the 5+2 format of the Transdniestria conflict talks and for the activity of the working groups that aim to build confidence between the two banks of the Dniester,” the communiqué says. <\/p>\n

That was the first visit to Bucharest by the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Euroasian Affairs, who is also the representative of the United States at the Transdniestria conflict settlement talks. <\/p>\n

Early in October, David Merkel paid a visit to Moldova and discussed possibilities of resuming the talks with the conflicting sides – Chisinau and Tiraspol.
