The European Union assumes the risk and could sign an agreement that will provide for Moldova’s accession to the EU even if the Communist regime in Moldova would use it for electoral purposes, the Romanian press says. <\/p>\n

According to the quoted source, the EU Representative in Chisinau says that the agreement, which will envision Moldova’s admission to the EU even if in a faraway future, could be signed before the 2009 legislative elections, offering thus President Vladimir Voronin an important electoral capital. “The ruling party could make use of the advantages offered by the European Commission’s mandate, but the positive effects of the EU’s signal to Moldova, which now has a geopolitical significance, is more important,” said the EU Representative for Moldova, Kalman Miszei. \"\"<\/p>\n

At the same time, Moldovan Foreign Minister Andrei Stratan said recently that Moldova will not give up its European integration plans and hopes that the EU will offer it a clear European prospect. In an interview for Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Stratan said that Moldova should be treated in the same way as the Western Balkan countries. <\/p>\n
