A new meeting of President of Moldova Vladimir Voronin and the leader of the breakaway Transdniestrian republic Igor Smirnov is set to take place this week, the Russian paper Kommersant said, quoting sources in the Transdniestrian administration. <\/p>\n

Kommersant said that the meeting between the two officials is scheduled for the end of this week. A trilateral Voronin-Smirnov-Medvedev meeting will take place late in November. <\/p>\n

The paper also says that the Voronin-Smirnov meeting forms part of a Russian plan for settling the Transdniestrian dispute. “Voronin will meet with Smironov in Bender, where they will coordinate their positions and prepare for a more important event – a joint meeting with President Dmitri Medvedev in Russia,” Kommersant said. <\/p>\n

At the meeting with Medvedev, the two officials are to sign a statement confirming that they adhere to the principles regarding the respect for Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and their commitment to launch talks to work out the legal status of Transdniestria within a united Moldova. <\/p>\n

According to the Russian paper, the trilateral meeting should take place not later than November so as Moscow could report significant progress in the Transdniestria conflict settlement process before the Meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers. <\/p>\n

”If the events develop according to Moscow’s plan, Russia could prove to the West that it is capable of solving the frozen conflicts in the post-Soviet area not only by using military force, but by diplomatic methods as well. Moreover, the United States and the EU will have the possibility of directly participating in the mediation between Chisinau and Tiraspol because Moscow is not against holding the talks in the 5+2 format,” Kommersant says.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
