The Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (PLDM) condemns the Russian Federation’s decision to recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia and describes it as direct aggression against Georgia and an open defiance of the international law. The party expresses its solidarity with the Georgian people. <\/p>\n

In a statement, PLDM says that this decision has a direct impact on the process of settling the conflict in Moldova’s Transdniestrian region. <\/p>\n

”We demand that the President and the Government adopt a trenchant position on Russia’s expansionist policy and take all the measures necessary so that Russia pulls out its troops from Moldova. We also demand that the Government show clear-sightedness in assessing the situation and do not accept solutions to the Transdniestrian conflict that run counter to the national interests,” the statement says. <\/p>\n

PLDM also says that the Parliament should hold an emergency meeting to assess the created situation and work out measures for not admitting the repeat of the scenario in Moldova. <\/p>\n

On August 26, President Dmitry Medvedev declared that Russia formally recognized the independence of Georgia’s breakaway enclaves.
