The Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (PLDM) expresses its concern about the decisions to support the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, made by Russia’s Federation Council and State Duma. <\/p>\n

In a statement, PLDM says that these decisions affect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia, openly defy the international law and are an additional proof that Russia cannot act as mediator and guarantor state in the process of settling frozen conflicts. <\/p>\n

”We call on the political parties, mass media and the civil society to make common cause and not admit the repeat of a similar scenario in Moldova,” the statement says. <\/p>\n

Given such circumstances, PLDM demands that the Parliament come together for an extraordinary meeting to assess the created situation and identify solutions so as to strengthen Moldova’s security and territorial integrity. <\/p>\n

On August 25, both houses of Russia’s parliament have urged the president to recognise the independence of Georgia’s breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. <\/p>\n
